Jan Eidrienne R. De Luis

Mid-Level ASSOCIATE

A new way of looking at things is what Jan brings to every case she handles. She forms ideas in a non-linear manner where no stone is left unturned and provides a creative approach to legal problems, guided by her training and experience both as an athlete and a journalist. Her unique process is then followed by a deliberate execution of a system to provide structure to her work and to execute the solutions crafted.

While all lawyers should be guided by legal principles in advocating for their clients, Jan’s uncompromising principles and whole-hearted desire to be of service ultimately light her way in advising clients and strategizing for the cases she handles. Her pragmatism and unorthodox thinking enable her to anticipate potential challenges in the matters she is involved in. Be it in court or in administrative tribunals, Jan’s perceptiveness allows her to quickly think on her feet during difficult situations.

Jan started her law career as an intellectual property lawyer in a medium-sized firm handling trademark prosecution, intellectual property dispute resolution and commercialization. With her penchant for learning, adaptable ways, and resilience, Jan has transitioned to various practice areas. Currently, she is involved in the Firm’s dispute resolution practice as well as its special projects. She has also advised clients on consumer-related matters, e-commerce, product liability, acquisitions, and labor and employment.

At first glance, Jan does not seem to fit every conventional representation of a lawyer in the Philippines, and while the legal profession and the modern perception of lawyers have yet to fully embrace eccentrics like Jan, her light-hearted demeanor and empathy allow her to properly relate to clients, opposing parties, and other attorneys. In turn, she applies the valuable insights from different perspectives to further hone her practice within the Firm’s inclusive environment.

Q&A

Why did you choose to join the Firm?

I was practicing a specialized field of law for two years since graduating from law school and I thought I owe to myself to at least experience other fields of law. Hence, my initial criteria for choosing a law firm to apply after my two-year stint as an intellectual property lawyer is a law firm without the structure of having different departments for specific practice areas—a law firm filled with practitioners who have a wealth of experience in different fields of law. My list of law firms was trimmed to a single firm when I added another criteria to my search. I wanted to be a part of an institution which genuinely cared for its members, not just as lawyers but as human beings. We were used to reducing ourselves to pompous professionals who are defined by our job titles. Thus, in self-preservation, I chose to join a Firm where I can be molded into the best lawyer I can be and at the same time lead an interesting life without fear of judgment.

How will you describe the Firm’s culture?

It is very collaborative and reassuring. The partners of the Firm encourage free discussion among team members and with their guidance and example we are constantly challenged to improve ourselves. While the partners expect good work from the Firm’s lawyers, they do so without the expense of jeopardizing our welfare. On the other hand, we, associates, maintain a supportive rapport with each other and we always look out for each other’s professional and personal growth and well-being.

How do you tread the challenges you face as a lawyer in the Firm?

My employment in the Firm came at a point in my life when I learned critical information about myself. I would have lived my life differently if I knew that piece of information head on. Needless to say, that information required necessary adjustments in my daily life. Coupled with the challenge of adjusting to different fields of practice which I have never experienced before, I was overwhelmed at first when work poured in. Through the help and support of the Firm’s lawyers and staff, who always respond to my inquiries, I learned how to better address problems and adjust to the Firm’s workflow. For maximum efficiency, I also try my best to keep myself healthy, by eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep, and making time for my interests outside the practice of law.
