Q&A

We were told that you are into photography. How did your interest in this hobby begin?

My love for photography began when I was in grade school when my parents gave me my first camera phone as a birthday gift. I immediately tried to take pictures of my parents, siblings and the action figures I collected back then. I tried out the different features of my camera phone available at that time and I tried experimenting on different photo compositions. From then on I was hooked. In high school, I saved up my allowance to buy my own digital camera. In college, I bought my first DSLR. And back in law school, I got into film photography and lomography.

Why the sudden shift from digital photography to film photography?

Film photography presents another layer of challenge that digital cameras do not provide. Film photography forces one to train his eyes. Unlike in digital cameras where the built-in computers provide the user with the optimal settings to produce the best possible photo in a given scenario, in film photography the person only has his eyes and experience to guide him in trying to tell the story of the subject matter that he wishes to capture. But with this challenge presented by film cameras comes a whole new realm of possibilities when one takes time to master the craft. Another reason that got me into film is the belief that it is more romantic in a sense that you get to have a physical copy of that point in time you captured, and the time and effort you put in to get that perfect shot.

How did your love for photography influence your practice of law?

Photography taught me not to be afraid of trying new things and exploring the different possibilities in a given situation. This hobby also taught me that there is always room for improvement. And part of this constant process of improving oneself is connecting with other people and trying to learn from their experiences. Applying these to my practice of law, I try to think outside of the box when faced with tough challenges. The law profession presents numerous hurdles in the long run that might seem daunting to others. But for me, these hurdles are opportunities for growth and chances to get to know other people and learn from them. Finally, in photography I had this knack for spending countless hours just trying to get the perfect shot to capture the moment and the story I want to tell. In the practice of law, I make it a point to give everything I have leaving no stone unturned.
