Q&A
How are you able to apply your Master’s Degree in Economics to your practice of law?
The principal pursuit of economics is the determination of the most efficient and logical allocation of resources to meet certain demands and goals. In the same manner, in legal practice, the rights and obligations of individuals are properly ascertained and delineated, but this time in accordance with the standards, not of efficiency, but of justice. There are many tools and theories that I learned in the study of economics which provided me with great opportunity towards a more sound and sustained legal practice. More importantly, I am convinced that the discipline and the personal skills that I developed in the study of economics paved the way for me to be able to handle and manage well the incessant demands that the practice of law entails.
How do you balance your career and motherhood?
Having to juggle two arduous roles at the same time seems impossible and overwhelming. Time and again, we hear many people say that the key is time management. While I do not disagree with such statement, I am more inclined to believe that hard work and our positive outlook in life make a lot of difference. When we realize we have countless things to accomplish with so little time, we learn to make the most out of the time that we have in hand and really strategize. And in doing so, I always take into consideration the corresponding consequences of my actions towards my work and, more crucially, my son.
You’re the first lawyer in the family. What made you decide to take up law?
I always thought that law school, and now the legal profession, happened as a result of every puzzle piece falling perfectly in its place, at its perfect time. Being a lawyer was not even one of my childhood dreams. Growing up, my only aspiration was to be able to do something that is bigger than myself. I learned to love the study of law along the way, and as fate would have it, I am now a full-fledged lawyer. I recognize now that the practice of law opens many opportunities that bring me closer to my personal and professional pursuits.
